A deacon in the Baptist church at Coedgleision, Betws Bledrws, which was moved to his house at Aberduar, on the removal of Enoch Francis the minister to live in the Newcastle Emlyn district about 1730. He began to preach on the minister’s death in 1740, but died in 1742.
DAVID SAUNDERS ‘I’ (died 1812), minister
His son, who began to preach in the church in 1764 and was ordained co-pastor with Zecharias Thomas and David Davies in the spring of 1771. His ministry, however, was not a complete success. He so lost his popularity among the members of Bethel, Caeo, that he was obliged to confine his activities to the other branches, and eventually adhered to the General Baptists, although it is not recorded that he accepted pastoral charge. He died at the home of his brother Thomas Saunders at Undergrove, Lampeter, 26 April 1812, at the age of 81.
He published Antigraphon; neu Wrthargraphiad Sion, yn achos y Cam-achwyniad a gafodd … mewn Llyfr Newydd, a elwir Amddiffyniad o’r Eglwys Grist’nogol, yn bedyddio Plant Bychain, 1780, and an elegy (Marwnad), 1791, on William Williams, Pantycelyn.
His nephew, son of Thomas Saunders, was David Saunders ‘II’, minister at Zion chapel, Merthyr Tydfil.
